Identity is the sense of who one is. Do you know your identity? Because if you do, life would be much easier. In this life, four questions are very important to know your identity.
Where have you come from? (Origin)
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines origin as “rise, beginning, or derivation from a source”. Rightly so, it makes us understand where something or someone is coming from. Marcus Garvey once said, “a people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots”. Knowing your origin is so important that Ivan Pavlov once said, “don’t become a mere recorder of facts but try to penetrate the mystery of their origin”.
What gives life meaning?
Life finds its meaning in God. The purpose of life can only be fulfilled in God alone. Without God in the picture, life has no meaning. God and life are inseparable. They are not mutually exclusive. God in His mercy allows each one to exist simply because He’s got the whole world in His hand. Embedded within the meaning of life is the idea of purpose. It is in fulfilling this purpose that we can find meaning and satisfaction in our lives. But this is possible only through Jesus Christ; that you find true meaning.
Where are you headed? (Destination)
After all is said and done, where are you headed? Is life just about being born, achieving your self-actualization and dying? Is that it? Well, for every one of us, we are headed for a final destination(which is dependent on our choices here on earth). Everyone is headed for eternity but what you need to reflect on is which side of eternity you will end up in. Either you will take Jesus as your Lord and personal saviour and have eternal life assured with Him or not take Him and end up in eternal condemnation. These destinations have names; heaven and hell. By all means, you will end up in one after you die here on earth.
The final question is that of morality (how do you distinguish right from wrong)
It is very interesting to hear some people claim that it is up to you to determine what is right from wrong, implying that we make our meaning of rightness and wrongness. To those people I would ask, if your family is massacred, is it right or wrong? And it gets them thinking. You see, there must be a standard of right somewhere and indeed there is. The objectivity of rightness is from God, the creator of the universe and has embedded this in nature. You do not need anyone to tell you murder is wrong because it is just not right and somehow you know it.
Now as a Christian, these questions are already answered and therefore your identity is established, not from what you do but what has been done for you; based on the finished work by Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary. Knowing your identity as a Christian must influence the way you live!
If you are not a Christian and you want to establish your identity based on the finished work of Christ Jesus, speak out audibly wherever you are, “Lord Jesus, help me to establish my identity in you. Come and be Lord over my heart and life. Today, I part ways with the world and choose you. Give me your Spirit and help me to live to please you. Thank you for accepting me as your child, in your name, Jesus I pray , amen!”
I will conclude by saying this: knowing your identity is key in your relationship with God. When you know it, your service to him, among other things won’t be difficult for you to do.
